LEARNING METHODS BULLETHIGH.gif (845 bytes)

At BGIMS, acquiring knowledge is not an end in itself. We believe you learn best by building on your experience and putting your new skills and understanding into practice immediately. The learning process is based on your open-minded participation, frank interaction with your classmates and exposure to international experts through the faculty and invited speakers.

The 500 + years of collective experience among the faculty is a valuable resource. They bring specialist knowledge and insights from a wide variety of backgrounds which they are expected to share in the classroom and in group work.

Teamwork is one of the fundamentals of the program – you spend about one third of your time in teams which are changed every semester. Apart from direct learning this produces, an experience that helps you build your skills in communication, leadership and conflict resolution.

The learning process at BGIMS typically takes place in three stages.

You start work on a subject by studying the material alone. Then you discuss your views with a group of 6-7 classmates whose different work experiences or cultural backgrounds may lead them to form different conclusions. Thirdly, your group presents its ideas in the classroom when a faculty member addresses the issues and introduces any relevant new concepts and techniques.

Case studies

In the academic part of the program you work on a substantial number of case studies involving a wide range of issues. Individually and in groups, you dissect real-life management dilemmas that have occurred in companies in several industries. We believe case studies are excellent learning tools because there is no single correct solution to complex business problems and the conflicting opinions that emerge, promote enquiry, discovery and tolerance for others view point.

Presentations

The ability to communicate and convince is an essential skill for a senior manager. You work in small groups to prepare and give presentations. This sharpens your ability to express ideas clearly and gives you valuable experience in defending collective decisions.

Class Speaker Series

You and your classmates run this series. Every year our MMS students invite a number of top-level speakers to talk about some aspect of their operation, their approach to business or their personal career. These often produce lively discussions and give valuable insights into how you "see things differently from the top".

Visits

In order to give you a better idea of what the BGIMS MMS program may offer you, we warmly invite you to visit the campus. We organize regular "Question and Answer" sessions for potential applicants, which gives you the opportunity to find out more about the program. You may sit in an MMS class and meet current participants. We encourage you to call the BGIMS Response Executive to schedule a campus visit before you apply.

"The Dream Team Week" is a Project that we have made a regular part of the program because it forces you and your classmates to go outside your usual terms of reference and give you an insight into team work that is valuable throughout your career. During Dream Team Week, the entire class must plan and execute an original project which captures the BGIMS spirit of teamwork.
